ADHD assessments for children and young people

We offer comprehensive ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) assessments for children and adolescents in Cork. Our assessments are led by a Clinical Psychologist and follow evidenced-based best practice and take a neuroaffirmative, strengths based approach.

ADHD Assessment process

We follow best practice guidelines in the assessment of ADHD. Assessments are conducted by a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and involve the use of standardised, validated measures. As part of the process, we gather information from multiple sources, including detailed discussions with you and, where appropriate, your child’s teachers.

Our ADHD assessment pathway is available for children and young people aged 7 years and older.

We are a neuroaffirmative practice. While the term ADHD includes the word “disorder”, we understand ADHD as a form of neurodivergence. We recognise that ADHD can present genuine challenges for children and young people, while also being associated with important strengths and abilities. Our assessments and reports aim to reflect this balanced understanding, exploring areas of need alongside the positive qualities, interests, and strengths you see in your child.

Please note that we do not provide medication as part of this service.

Medication requires assessment by a psychiatrist or other appropriate medical professional. Our assessments provide therapeutic, educational, and practical recommendations that may be used to support your child in accessing appropriate services and school based accommodations.

What happens during an ADHD assessment?

Step 1

Pre-assessment Questionnaires
We will ask both you and your child’s school to complete a set of questionnaires. These help us build a fuller understanding of your child’s profile across different settings and identify areas where they may benefit from additional support.

Step 2

Appointment with You
We will then meet with you to talk through your child’s developmental history and consider areas of difference you may have noticed. This appointment should take around 90 mins.

Step 3

Appointment with Your Child
Your child will meet with us in our Cork clinic for around 1-2 hours. This session will involve completing a cognitive assessment and speaking with a clinician about their experiences. You are also welcome to join for this session.

Step 4

Diagnostic Report and Feedback Session
Following the assessment we will compile all the information into a comprehensive report. This report will outline the diagnostic findings- if a diagnosis is applicable- and include further recommendations for support and intervention.

Cost: €1500

*There may be instances where additional consultations, observations, or formal measures are required to assist us in the assessment process. There may be a charge associated with these which will be discussed and agreed with you first.

Preparing for the day

While we make every effort to create a supportive and relaxed environment, the process of assessment can be daunting. For neurodiverse children, meeting new people and being in an unfamiliar space can be a considerable source of stress and anxiety.

As part of our pre-assessment questionnaires and appointment with you we will talk about accommodations that may support your child to engage with the process.

We can also provide you with photographs and video of the space prior to the appointment.

ADHD Consultation

Many parents and young people are unsure whether a full ADHD assessment is needed for their child or whether another pathway, such as an assessment for autism may be required. We offer a consultation session with a psychologist to talk through your concerns and explore whether an assessment is the right choice for you.

If you decide to proceed to the full assessment following the consultation, the consultation fee will be taken off the total price of the assessment.

Cost: €270
