While cognition and learning is only one area of your child’s overall development, it plays an important role in their experience of and engagement with school. Early assessment can help in planning and shaping your child’s education pathways. It can also afford you access to specialist supports and accommodations.
Our process
We follow best practice guidelines around the assessment of cognition and learning. This means we use both standardised assessments and collateral information from teachers and parents to support our assessment.
There are different levels of assessment depending on your needs, so it may be helpful to consider whether you want to:
- Understand your child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses;
- Test for giftedness;
- Identify specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia);
- Apply for educational accommodations (e.g. Irish language exemption, assistive technology, RACE/DARE scheme).
Cognitive Assessment
This assessment focuses on overall IQ, verbal and visual spatial skills, processing speed, and memory. It does not examine your child’s academic abilities.
This includes a detailed consultation with parents and an assessment session with the child or young person. The total time for this assessment is around 2 hours and can be completed in a single session or divided as required.
Parents will then receive a full written report, including the summarised findings and recommendations. Parents will also receive a feedback and discussion session to talk through the report.
Cost: €750
Educational Assessment
This assessment includes all aspects of the cognitive assessment and also examines your child’s academic abilities. This assessment can identify specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or dyscalculia and may also be used to test for giftedness.
The total time for this assessment is around 3 hours and is often completed over two sessions.
Cost: €900
Psycho-Educational Assessment
This assessment includes all aspects of the educational assessment with additional standardised measures and observation tools.
The cost and total time for this assessment will depend on the nature and depth of testing and will be discussed and agreed at the outset.
